Nora, our mum and mum-in-law, was an outgoing business woman who led an active life. As she aged, we tried to keep her safe and independent. She moved closer to us into a warden supervised apartment where she had home care visits and it worked for a while. When she was found outside in her nightie on a cold winter’s night, we knew the time had come to make other arrangements.

We asked many people about local care homes, we didn’t want her miles away, we needed to still be part of her life as did her grandchildren and great grandchildren. A trusted member of the medical profession told us about Elizabeth House saying it was the only local home she would ever consider a relative of her own living in. Fortunately, after applying, it did not take too long for Mum to be offered a room.

What a wonderful recommendation Elizabeth House was.

Mum lived there for a number of years until the end of her life. She was so well looked after; nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Mum enjoyed the food, the entertainment, the company and the gardens.

As a family we visited frequently, always being offered tea and biscuits or squash and lollipops for the children. We had family birthday parties in the little lounge, we spent Christmas mornings opening presents there.

When eventually Mum came to the end of her life, she was in her own bed, in her own room at Elizabeth House, loved and cared for.
